Ahhh…the great outdoors
Ahhh…the great outdoors.
Most all of us look forward to enjoying time with friends and family out in the mountains, the park or a nearby lake…
Anyone who has been camping knows that peril abounds and that planning and precautions can definitely improve your experience and your safety.
First, these are the things to look out for:
1. Bug bites
2. Rash-causing plants
3. Allergic reactions
4. Harsh climate
5. Getting lost
First, for bug bites and plants make sure that you wear long clothes and cover exposed skin with bug repellent.
For allergies, make sure you bring some antihistamines for both children and adults.
The key to dealing with the harsher climate is to have proper clothing and equipment. Layering is really the key to be able to adjust to extreme heat in the day and the frosty chill of night.
To prevent getting lost there are many steps you can take:
1. Have everyone wear bright clothing
2. Bring topographical maps
3. Have each person wear a whistle (the sound carries well)
4. Teach children to recognize the campsite landmarks
5. Bring a compass and cell phone (though it may not have coverage everywhere)
One final consideration: if you plan on drinking water from the stream or lake, you should consider any source contaminated. The most common contaminant is Giardia Lamblia, a common parasite that can cause all sorts of gastro disasters…
Either boil the water or, even easier, buy some iodine tablets to dissolve in the water for purification.
All of us here at Allstate-Resource Insurance Group wish you continued health and safety.
Sincerely,
Jimmy Moore, Rusty Prewett & Staff
